Hello love, today I want to share with you my experiences of being a make-up artist. Some may think it’s an easy job but believe it can be tough and require a lot of work and efforts. So here are some positive and negative points for me to work in this industry:
I have been working as a makeup artist part time since 2011 and full time since 2015 and I’ve seen a lot, may be not everything but I’ve seen a lot when it comes to what this industry has to offer locally. Good things, bad things but in the end it’s all about who you are and how you want to see it. Right now I’m like ok Hans BE CAREFUL, WRITE POSITIVELY EVEN IF THERE ARE THINGS THAT S*CK BIG TIMES BECAUSE EVENTUALLY THE JOB, THE PASSION, THE PEOPLE ARE WORTH IT.
Pros/Advantages : Cause you’ll still have to wait for the gossips (laugh)
I have always been in love with arts. I draw, paint, try to design dresses, do bouquets and other stuffs that for me allow me to tune in with creativity. I love using my hands to create, I feel like a vessel used by the divine to bring something magic to life.
Makeup allows me to do this. It’s a way to create a temporary but impacting piece of art on someone’s face. Sculpt, define, colour, these are part of makeup and these are also part of painting or drawing. I don’t see myself painting everyday but doing makeup feels like I’m doing so and I looooooove it! Argh feels so good to write this!
When I was in high school a math teacher told me in a condescending way:
What will you ever do with that? You’ll end up may be as an art teacher but what else?
10 years later my answer to that lady would be, I am Hans Telvave, I am a makeup ARTIST, an entrepreneur, a blogger, a Man. And this is what art has done to me. It’s a flame that never burned me nor ever burnt out.
It is ok to love science, math, politics, sociology, design, arts… it is never ok to put someone down because he/she is different from you. When you see difference, listen to understand and not to hear, to judge and to bully. Every person is different and talented; it just takes an open mind to let every individual develop into his/her best self. To those who understood that, empowered me and believed in me THANK YOU.
Ok this is another part where magic happens. A smile, a pat on the shoulder or just a moment of silence can click it all together. A friend of mine often told me, my darling, us hairstylists and makeup artists are the first psychologist of women.
I have this one absolutely beyond gorgeous regular client who’s been gaining weight recently due to stress. I would see her enter the parlour in a rush a bit lost, a bit uncomfortable with herself. Then she would get her hair done and come for the makeup. We would chat and I would always tell her the very same things about how beautiful she is and how important it is that she takes care of herself. The person leaving the parlour is radically different. She would smile wider, walk taller and stare at her a last time and say “Thank you, I always feel better as a person each time I leave this place.” Feeling the energy of a person shift from hurt to positive is absolutely rewarding. It makes me feel like I have reached my purpose in life. Making people feel good.
When I was younger I really wanted to change the world and live a life that brings a positive impact to the world. Doing make up makes me feel like I have accomplished this, one person at a time, one habit at a time, I am bringing my positive contribution. Thank you life for choosing me to do this.
• You get to be invited to VIP Events
Yes yes yes you get invited to amazing launching, you get free gifts that cost a lot of money, and you get to hang out with trendy people. Each times an invite reaches my mail or letter box I am super happy. This one could be both in the pros and in the cons section but I chose to put it here because I am an epicurean. I enjoy the pleasures of life and do enjoy the beauty of luxury. It is a thing to enjoy it but I always focus on being myself while enjoying it, that’s what helps me to be real in such events.
Makeup really is something that brings sparkles in the eyes of so many people; I’m still trying to figure out why but being a successful makeup artist does make you a public figure. Public exposure is one of these things that can be in both the pros and cons sections. Here I am talking about the positive side because it is a powerful tool. The more I get famous the more I get powerful in terms of business opportunities and the impact that I have on people. For example before I would beg for a sponsorship, now I get to choose whom I want to surround myself with and create beautiful things with.
When I was younger I would often feel powerless in front of things that I was living and that made me very angry. When you become a public figure, you become a voice and this grants me room for proper fulfillment.
See you soon for part 2.
